Use of computers in the library Link to Menlo Library home page

The computers at Menlo School are made available to students to supplement their academic pursuits. We provide an unfiltered environment so that patrons have access to all available information, however the computers are not present for entertainment purposes. Menlo School policy states that the network must be used for educational purposes only. In addition, because these computers are shared by the entire Menlo community, specific guidelines for their use must be followed so that they continue function consistently. The following additional guidelines apply to the use of school computers. Use of these computers implies an understanding and agreed compliance to these guidelines.

Acceptable Uses

  • Use of the installed applications for academic purposes (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Netscape Communicator).
  • Internet searching for research purposes and more general news and information.
  • Using the computers for personal email related to academic pursuits at Menlo (communication with other students and with faculty and staff). Personal email sessions should be limited to a maximum of ten minutes (cumulative) daily.
  • Downloading web pages and images relevant to academic pursuits at Menlo School


Unacceptable Uses

  • Use of applications or programs found on the computers other than those installed by Menlo School (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Netscape Communicator).
  • Downloading game files or using the computers for playing games of any kind, either loaded from a disk or found on the Internet.
  • Chat rooms of any kind.
  • Copying installed applications onto a storage devicefor personal use.
  • Excessive printing of material not related to academic pursuits at Menlo School.

Please remember that these are shared computers and files other than the applications installed by Menlo School are regularly deleted as part of the maintenance procedures. Users should not leave any personal files on these computers as there are no gaurantees that they will be there the next day. Always store your work in your account on the Jupiter server.

In a library we want to maintain a learning environment. The default sound setting on these computers is mute. If you have need to use a program or access a web site relevant to your academic pursuits at Menlo School that requires sound, ask for headphones.

Students who have need for more advanced computer use (applications not installed on the computers) should direct their requests to Eric Spross, Director of Educational Technology. Failure to adhere to these guidelines will result in a denial of access to the school's computers.
